FINISHED SINCE THE LAST UPDATE:
Nora’s latest series ended just about the way I expected. It was a great diversionary read but by no means her best effort.
Ms. Gay’s latest selection of short stories is a gut-wrencher. They are all worth reading but none of them are emotionally easy reads.
Switching gears with Megan Miranda’s debut was not easy but necessary after the gut punch that was Ms. Gay’s novel. Ms. Miranda’s was sufficiently entertaining but left me wanting. The gimmick of its storytelling had me confused, and I am not convinced it made for a better story.
Megan Abbott’s latest however was exactly what I hoped it would be. Exciting, intense and capturing that close-knit, brutally ambitious community that is competitive anything, I devoured it in a day.

So, what are you reading?

So I take it the wolves in the title are a metaphor, and that the novel doesn’t have wolves in it? Just wondering. I like the idea of wolves in a book. I just finished & reviewed Behold the Dreamers & now I plan to pick up The Mothers. Happy Holidays to you & your family! Enjoy!
Definitely a metaphor but I am not very far into it yet to be sure.
I am sure I will get Difficult Women at some point, but I still haven’t finished her essay collection. I am so bad at smaller works and finishing them in a timely manner.
These is a collection of short stories, so you could read one a night. I almost wish I had because each story is so powerful. Yet, there was something compelling me to keep reading them too. I normally dislike short story collections, but I was very impressed by Gay’s.
I don’t think All the Missing Girls was her better novel. Took me awhile to get into it, but I did enjoy it. I hope you try The Perfect Strangers. It’s much better!
I was definitely not impressed with the whole “backwards” storytelling. Especially since it was not really backwards. Too gimmicky.
SO glad to hear good things about Difficult Women. I planned to read it a few weeks ago, but ended up waiting on it (probably a good decision looking back), but definitely excited to get to it soon.
It is definitely the type of collection of short stories that requires reading it at the right time. I know you won’t regret waiting!
