This is yet another new feature in which I want to share some of the things that have me obsessed from month-to-month.
********************
Music – I get it now. I understand why everyone has been raving about it. Hamilton, the Original Broadway Cast Recording is totally worth all the fuss and obsession. In fact, Holly and I have been listening to it pretty much non-stop since I first decided to check it out for myself. The songs are catchy. The story is amazing. The lyrics have a way of worming themselves into your brain and lodging there, which is not a bad thing. (Work!) Do yourself a favor and listen to it. You will not regret a minute of it!
Movies – Another thing to which I finally succumbed to the buzz is the movie version of one of my favorite books, The Martian. While it was missing some of my favorite lines in the book and definitely toned down the sarcasm, it was a fantastic movie. As Connor said, “I know what is going to happen but I am still edgy and nervous!” I should have never doubted Matt Damon’s ability to become Mark Watney.
TV – You know I do not watch a lot of television, so when I do, it is a momentous occasion. One of the shows I will drop everything to watch is Sherlock. I was so excited when they announced a new episode for the first of the year. I am so happy that it did not disappoint either. I loved seeing all of the characters in period dress, and the plot! It was every bit as quirky and humorous and intense as I expected. Now, they just need to hurry up and make the rest of season four!
Makeup – I am not a moisturizing person. For years, I considered it one of the big contributors to my bad skin. Then, this winter I developed weird red, flaky patches around the corners of my lips and nose. Enter a search to find something that would make that go away. Who would have thought the answer would come to me as a Birchbox sample?
Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream for Dry Skin is a godsend. It is hands-down one of the best lotions I have ever tried. Not only has it gotten rid of those nasty dry patches, but it does not cause me to break out. Even better, my skin feels softer and more supple than it has in decades. I use it on my face. I use it on my lips. I use it on my cuticles. It is that good.

These are just a few of the things which have made me happy this month. What are some of your favorite things for January?

I really need to see The Martian!
Yes, you do!
I apparently need to check out this Hamilton soundtrack. I am seeing it everywhere! I haven’t seen The Martian yet, but I really want to. I keep putting it off.
Yes on both counts!
I loved The Martian! I agree it was missing some good lines, but I think they also did good with selecting the right action scenes.
And I’ll have to check this moisturizer, I really need something better for my skin to survive the winter weather.
By the way, I love this type of posts! I see booktubers do it a lot and never thought of doing it with words. I might borrow it too if you don’t mind! 🙂
Thanks, Kay! It is something I never really felt comfortable doing, but then I figure that if others can share their favorite things, why not me?
HOORAY! I get the biggest smile on my face every time someone new likes Hamilton. It’s just the greatest of shows. I want to give it a hug.
Me too! Plus, now I really want to see it on stage. I heard it is coming to Chicago this fall. I need to scout tickets.
Love this new feature!!
I’m right there with you on Hamilton. Didn’t even listen to it a couple of weeks ago but only partway through I absolutely got why people have been raving. I’m working on getting The Hubster to listen to the whole thing – we’ve got a short road trip next weekend so I think I’ll be in charge of the car audio.
I was saying the same thing as Connor about The Martian – they had to change things in order to fit it into a movie length story but they did a good job of not messing with the feel of it too much. I was ‘edgy and nervous’ right along with Connor in the final part of the movie. I was disappointed when I heard Matt Damon got the role because I had Chris Pratt as Mark’s voice when I read the book. Once I saw the first trailer I was a convert to Matt Damon as Mark Watney – he did a fabulous job.
Thanks! Oh, he’s going to love it. Connor enjoys it too, although he won’t admit it. His AP US History teacher played sections of it for them in class.
I love this idea, can I steal it?!?! I’ve been seeing Hamilton everywhere and had no clue what it was. I have to check this out asap. The Martian is so popular, I know I’m missing out there, too.
I never use moisturizer because I have such oily skin. And even though they say it’s better to use it even with oily skin because it balances things out, I still break out and haven’t found anything that works. I’ll have to try this one!
I very rarely watch TV, but I’ve heard of that show, so I at least don’t live totally under a rock. Lol. It looks good. I used to be a tv junkie, but reading has become the only thing I want to do in the evenings. Okay, small white lie…I will get sucked into Big Bang Theory. Who doesn’t?! 🙂
Absolutely!
Yes, you need to check out the soundtrack. I honestly did not think I would love it as much as I do. Holly loves it so much that she has started choreographing dances to some of the songs. She plays it almost nonstop. Note, it is not for young children. This is not Les Miserables or Wicked or Phantom of the Opera. It is very much an adult musical, and since a lot of the music is hip-hop/rap/R&B, there is most definitely swearing.
I say watch the movie because Matt Damon is awesome in it. If you like that, then read the book, for the book is definitely better.
I honestly have the same problems with moisturizers. Between this, which doesn’t leave my skin oily at all, and a finishing powder, which will be on my list in February, I maintain a matte finish and have no problems with breakouts. Now, I do avoid my problem areas, like my chin and forehead, but I will be testing my forehead over the next month to see if that also improves.
Oh, you need to watch Sherlock. Seriously, the best thing on TV right now. Holly is obsessed. When she is bored, she will watch previous episodes on Netflix. It is funny and intense and weird, and it contains Benedict Cumberbatch. (Enough said in my book.) Plus, you like suspense/mystery, so these would be right up your alley!
I still need to see The Martian. I adored that book beyond reason. I rarely seem to make time to actually go to the theater but it’s out on DVD now isn’t it? Score!
I’m always on the hunt for awesome moisturizers, I’ll keep my eyes open for this one.
(I dig this post!)
Yes, it is! We snagged a copy of it on Blu-Ray. It isn’t quite as funny as the novel, and they did keep out some of my very favorite lines. Even with some minor changes to the plot, it was still very intense and thrilling. Matt Damon did an excellent job!
I think you might have to order it online. I ordered mine through Birchbox, but I did see that you can get it at Amazon too. I hope you can get your hands on a tube!
(Thank you! There is so much in the make-up area alone I could have shared. I thought I would limit it to just one thing to avoid scaring people entirely.)
