Hosted by Sheila from Book Journey, this is a weekly event to share what we’ve read in the past week and what we hope to read, plus whatever else comes to mind. To learn more about each book, just click on the book cover!
Finished Last Week:
While Emma Hooper’s novel is already garnering comparisons to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, it is such a different novel. Beautiful and sad, it is one I wish I had read a little more slowly in order to savor every poetic word. Eric Smith’s debut novel is fast-paced. A little simplistic for my taste, the cover more than makes up for the downfalls of the book. It is just so beautiful (the picture doesn’t do it justice). The Martian makes me happy. I loved it the first time I read it; I loved it on audio. Mark Watney is my hero. Victoria Aveyard has written an amazing debut novel. I don’t even care about the fact that it is the first in yet another trilogy, as it has been so long since I’ve had a book that I literally could not stop reading. Way to go, Ms. Aveyard.
Did Not Finish:
Caught by the archive/expiration date again! I really need a better method for catching these before they expire.
Currently Reading:
Currently Listening:
I absolutely love Travis Maddox. Will I love his brothers just as much? It is time to find out.
Up Next:
What are you reading?

Ohhh I need to hear if you like My Sunshine Away as I’m thinking of getting it. Right now I’m reading American Sniper. I kid you not. Not sure why exactly but I got to plow thru the rest. cheers! http://www.thecuecard.com
I LOVED My Sunshine Away. Seriously loved it. I even found myself bookmarking passages – something I never do.
I am halfway through reading Jennifer McMahon’s Island of Lost Girls. And almost finished listening to Ann Aguirre’s Outpost. I simply couldn’t finish Megan Shepherd’s 1st book, The Madman’s Daughter — the love triangle was ridiculous and the credibility gaps in the story made me want to scream. I loved The Martian though! (Who hasn’t?) Your up next titles all look intriguing.
I hear you on The Madman’s Daughter. I can’t say I’m exactly torn that I missed the expiration and archive dates.
Currently reading The Martian, and I’m loving it! Want to read both My Sunshine Away and Etta and Otto.
Yay! Another fan! It is still one of my favorite books of the last few years. I hope you continue to love it!
I am glad you enjoyed THE MARTIAN on audio. I have it and really want to read it that way. 🙂
I liked both formats. There are some visuals in the book I missed in the audio, and there are some reactions that are just priceless via audio but lose some of their snark in print. I just love the story though, no matter what the format!
I gotta get back to old Etta. I left her in the middle of a field somewhere.
Wasn’t the audio of The Martian fantastic? I loooooved it.
I’m pretty sure Etta is always in a field somewhere.
The audio was fantastic. I could listen to it again right now!
Happy to hear about Red Queen, not sure I’ll read but the author is touring with 2 other YA authors and I’m moderating a panel at my fav Indie bookstore. February books are as appealing as January, thankfully I have a smaller stack and I can’t wait to dig in.
I’ve been enjoying my February books so much more than my January ones. My stack ended up being just as big, but that’s okay!
The Martian is on my to-read list, and I can’t wait to read your review! I’m also really interested in Red Queen, but I’ve mixed things. I’m excited to see what you have to say about it!
I really enjoyed Red Queen. It wasn’t perfect, but it was certainly entertaining. The Martian was a re-read. I loved it the first time and the second and could go ahead and read it over again right now.
I’m reading A Man Called Ove which is phenomenal. I went from nearly crying to laughing out loud during my commute this morning. Also finishing Ghettoside which was sad and good.
I have seeker, a touch of stardust and Red Queen all sitting on my coffee table from ALA now waiting for me-I’ll be curious to see what you think!
I’ve heard great things about A Man Called Ove. I was thinking about adding it to my Audible wish list. Glad to hear it was good!
Adding Red Queen to my list. 🙂 I can’t resist a book that passed the “can’t put it down” test for another blogger.
You won’t be disappointed!
I’ve been wondering if Beautiful Oblivion has gotten any better for you? I’ve been seeing some reviews that Redemption is better but I still can’t bring myself to try it.
So, I really hate cliffhangers. If I try Red Queen, am I going to be really frustrated at the end? It sounds great.
Nope. I was okay with it until the very ending. And then, forget it. I have SO many issues with the big secret. It was just wrong.
You should be okay. It isn’t a cliffhanger ending, but the series definitely continues. I think you will be okay.
Non-fiction: How We Got to Now by Steven Johnson. It’s about how six major inventions (phones, artificial light, refrigeration, etc.) have had significant, unanticipated consequences. For example, the wide-spread availability of air conditioning changed the political makeup of the congress (denser populations in the south and southwest). Very interesting.
Fiction: The Ivy Tree by Mary Stewart. An oldie (1961) but a goodie: very much a “woman in peril in an isolated manor house” redeemed by excellent writing and character development.
Oh, that nonfiction book sounds wonderful. I will have to check it out!
Oh but I’m not a “she”!
That’s okay! Anyone who reads is okay in my book.
Finished ANCILLARY SWORD by ANN LECKIE Saturday night. Good follow up to first book and a good reason to read her third book in a series.
You have to love a follow-up that is actually worthy!
