Finished Last Week:
Did Not Finish:
This is my second attempt at listening to a le Carré novel. I do love his writing and his stories, so I always think that they are going to be worthwhile audios. This is just not so. He narrates his own stories and is so slow and deliberate, he makes even the most exciting scenes incredibly boring. In addition, the mouth sounds and whistling over any sibilant letters is enough make me cringe while listening. In fact, I gave it one hour while driving to and from work, and I still found myself wincing at the sounds that were coming through the speakers. So, this might be a fantastic thriller/mystery, but I am done with trying to listen to John le Carré via audio.

What are you reading?

You have a very pretty blog. The Girl You Left Behind sounds like something I would like to read.
Looking forward to more of your reviews.
PS Karr
Thank you very much! The Girl You Left Behind is a great book. Have a great week!
Mouth and breathing sounds drive me bonkers too! But when you get a good reader, an audiobook is pure magic 🙂
I absolutely adored The Secret Keeper, it was my first Kate Morton book and it enthralled me. Hope you enjoy as much as I did!
Yeah, le Carre is not a good reader. I wish he would stop narrating his own books because I think they would be great on audio.
I love Kate Morton. This is the only one of hers I haven’t read yet, so I’m enjoying it!
I have no idea what THE PURCHASE is about, but the cover really drew me in. I’ll be watching for your review!
THE PURCHASE is about a Quaker who gets shunned from his community and ends up taking his family south. As an abolitionist, he is violently opposed to slavery but finds himself inadvertently purchasing a slave upon arrival. The book is about the repercussions of the purchase on his family and on himself. It is very interesting although very drab, as you can imagine with the subject matter. The review will go live in August.
Hmmm … well, I think I’ll hold off putting this on my list until I read your full review.
I know Nicole was reading it and was really enjoying it. I wasn’t quite as impressed. I still have to write my review, so I will be giving it some thought over the next few days!
The Girl You Left Behind is currently waiting patiently for me on my Nook. I cannot wait to read more of Jojo Moyes!
I somehow missed reading her first one but I definitely want to go back to it. I have it so it’s just a matter of finding the time.
Gahhhh mouth sounds! I think that’s the biggest reason I’ve never even attempted an audio, lol.
I also have the Moyes and the Mott coming up. I hope we both enjoy them!
Have a great week Michelle 🙂
Mouth sounds are actually very unusual these days, so I think you are safe if you ever want to attempt one! I think if le Carre were not narrating his own books, they would be excellent audios.
The Returned was definitely not what I expected. The Girl You Left Behind was bittersweet, wasn’t it?
