Thursdays – how do I love thee? Although honestly, this Thursday snuck up on me as it means I have nine more days until my next certification exam. Yikes! I better write this quick so I can get back to studying!
Thursday means Booking Through Thursday, my very favorite bookish meme that gets me to think about and talk about books. (But honestly, do we ever really need an excuse to do so?)
The northern hemisphere, at least, is socked in by winter right now… So, on a cold, wintry day, when you want nothing more than to curl up with a good book on the couch … what kind of reading do you want to do?
I have a very shameful confession. I have not done this once this winter. Trust me; I am neither proud or happy with this fact. I plan to remedy it as soon as I pass this third exam next week.
As for what kind of reading I like on winter days where staying inside under blankets is a must? I am not picky. My only stipulation is that the book keeps me engaged. I read according to my mood, and my tastes vary so much that I will read just about anything if given the time. But, if I am going to spend an entire afternoon reading, then I want something that will suck me right into the story, absorbing me so fully that the afternoon is over before I know it. That is the best type of winter reading, in my opinion.
As for specific books, I honestly cannot think of a one right now. Again, I read according to mood. Some days I might be in the mood for a thriller, and at other times for a romance. Sometimes, I am looking for a quick read and will peruse one of the many young adult novels hanging out on my shelves these days. Either way, if I am reading it on a long winter afternoon, no matter what it is, it is the type of reading I want at that time.
Do you like how I hedged that answer? ;-D Are there specific genres that interest you only in winter? Are there any novels that just scream “winter reading” of which I should be aware?

Lisa – I know exactly what you mean. I read The Terror by Dan Simmons when it was still relatively cool outside. Because it takes place in the Arctic circle, there was constant talk of ice, driving winds, frostbite, the works. I swear I did not warm up until after I finished the book!
Lori – I tend to be more of a mood reader than anything else these days!
Nashvillebookworm – I think you are right. Summer, when we are on the go more and constantly carrying our books to the pool, to the park, to the beach, we want something light and easy to carry. In winter, when we do nothing but stay at home, we can pull out the Tolstoy or the Dickens and curl up with it in our lap without worrying about ruining it.
Ceri – I wish we had decent parks around here that were inviting to readers. Either we have to drive to one (along with everyone else) or else the park is so new that there are no benches nor any shade. That's what we get for living in a newer neighborhood!
Callista – I have read this winter. I just have experienced whiling away an entire afternoon yet. I will remedy that situation though.
Gautami – I'm with you on that one.
Alayne – Escapist is perfect!
Jennifer – I agree with you! A book any time is perfect!
I'm with you on this. Although I tend to steer away from anything that is too winter related or too summery. Just cuz that gives me the chills–either thinking about more cold or thinking of people in bathing suits when all I can see is snow!
You're a mood reader. I feel like that at times.
Here's Mine
I always feel like winter is the time to maybe look harder at my list of TBR books…or maybe to consider one of those books I feel I should have read before now but haven't.
Same thing with movies. Summers can be for fun books and movies. But winter it seems they should be more serious.
That said during a recent snow storm, I read the latest Star Trek novel. But I will say I'd started it as a comfort book while waiting for a doctor's appointment…LOL
Hehe. For me I can't think of anything that screams winter reading for me. The weather does affect my location though.
When the sun comes out (which is very rare over here), I love going to the park or the beach and sitting in the sun to have a good long read. When it's cold (about 80% of the time :P), under a blanket is always the best. 😀
Do you mean you haven't read at all this winter? If so, that's terrible!
Here's my BTT Answer
I read pretty much anything, anytime!
BTT: Winter Reading
I recommend anything escapist! My answer's at The Crowded Leaf.
My choices are not season dependent. My BTT: http://www.rundpinne.com/2010/02/booking-through-thursday-genre.html
Cutlex – Great choice! That series definitely ranks up there with the best winter reading possible!
I have!
