- What books did you get for Christmas (or whichever holiday you may have celebrated last month)?
- Do you usually ask for books on gift-giving occasions or do you prefer to buy them yourself?
Well, I already answered this question over the holidays. (I even included pictures!) So, rather than rehash what I wrote, you’ll forgive me if I just link to my previous article about my gifts received, complete with my pretty pictures.
As for asking for books on gift-giving occasions, this is the first year I have ever deliberately asked for them. Typically, I secretly hope that someone will remember that I am an avid reader and surprise me with a gift card to a book store. Unfortunately, no one seems to remember that, and I never get either a book or a bookstore gift card. This year, I took matters into my own hands and made sure I sent out my wish list to all of my relatives. I feel comfortable receiving books as long as they are purchased from that list. Otherwise, while I am fairly open to any and all books, I would prefer to buy off my list myself. (Is that too snobby?)
What do you think? Books as gifts or gift cards?

Melanie – I am very jealous. You have great family and friends!
Book Dilettante – You gave away a book that you want to read? That's dedication! I do agree that books are very much like clothes but I think they are even more intimidating to choose, especially if the person choosing is a non-reader.
I guess i am a lucky one. I get books and gift cards almost every gift occasion.
I bought a book and gave away a book, and now hope that I can borrow the one I gave away to read sometime 🙂 I think books are like clothes – sometimes too personal in taste to choose for others.
jlshall – Giving books is a double-edged sword, isn't it? It can be a dangerous thing to guess on what others may enjoy. But sometimes, I feel that giving bookstore gift cards is a bit impersonal, you know?
Jennifer – My thoughts exactly!
Nice, Susan! Glad to hear that Christmas 2009 was better in the book-receiving department!
I really think books are the best gifts, both to give and receive. But I usually prefer book store gift cards instead of the books themselves. I love being able to choose my own books, and I don't have to take a chance on guessing what others might enjoy.
Both! My BTT: http://www.rundpinne.com/2010/01/booking-through-thursday-my-first.html
I always ask for books, but seldom receive them 🙂 I was a very lucky girl this Christmas though! Here is my BTT response.
