We’ve done the recent best and the recent worst. This week’s Booking Through Thursday meme continues in the same vein.
The most recent bit of fluff I’ve read is Julie and Julia by Julie Powell. It was so fluffy that I am having problems writing the review for it. Even though it is a memoir, I still count it as fluff because I would hope that memoirs have more to offer than publicity. (Light on plot and accomplishments and character development, I wasn’t quite taken with Ms. Powell.)
Actually, it’s been a while since I’ve read a complete fluff piece. Hmmm…I feel another Nora Roberts coming on….

Savvy Working Gal – I thought the potty mouth irritation was just me, and I'm no peach when it comes to my choice of words. I just choose not to use them in a more permanent form of communication like the written word. I think that's the one thing that irritated me the most!
I too thought Ms. Powell’s book was fluffy. I read it a couple of years ago after a friend told me how funny it was; I didn’t think it was overly funny plus her potty mouth got on my nerves.
I saw her interviewed on Saturday’s Early Show a couple of weeks ago; she is even less appealing in person. She mentioned they did not consult her when they wrote the screenplay. I am hoping they softened her character and put more of an emphasis on Julia Child.
Kristy – Yeah, not really a fan. I'm still struggling with what her true aim was. To finish something she started? To gain publicity? Because I never got the impression she liked to cook. And with how much of a drama every recipe became? I don't think she was very good either. Then again, I've never tried to cook kidney or brains or liver or anything related to internal organs.
Ceri – It's an okay read, in my opinion. I have some very strong thoughts and semi-conflicting thoughts on it that is causing me to delay in writing the review. But I've heard nothing but fabulous things about Meryl in the movie. She makes the movie and is worth going to see it. Even knowing how I feel about the book, I will be seeing it eventually.
Thank goodness someone else feels the same way. I read it a couple of years ago. It caught my eye because I like anything food related. She lost me on page 1 or 2 when she casually mentioned selling her “eggs” like it was no big deal. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I don't think so. I finished it, but didn't really like it. I am going to see Julie and Julia this weekend, but hope the Julia Child part makes up for the book.
I still don't know whether I want to read this. The only reason I fancy the film is because Meryl Streep's in it (and I could watch her watch paint dry!) but, other than that, it hasn't interested me too much. I do look forward to your review though and seeing what you thought 🙂
