The Sunday Salon - January 24, 2010

TSS Button

I made it through the week.  That is about all that can be said for last week.  I averaged over 11 hours at work each day, with all of those hours being spent in meetings.  I somehow managed to remain caught up on both work and work e-mail, even though I do not have a work laptop and barely sat at my desk the entire week.  Of course, it did help that all those who give me work were all sitting in the same meetings with me.  Since this is a yearly event, I can now rest for a few weeks.  Then again, my next exam is on February 13th, and I really have not started studying in earnest, so rest will have to wait.

Because I had absolutely no energy to do anything else, I did manage to finish one book this week, Be the Change: How Meditation Can Transform You and the World by Ed and Deb Shapiro.  It is going to be a difficult book review to write because the topic does not necessarily appeal to the masses.  I hope to write the review this afternoon and post it later in the week, but you know what they say about the best-laid plans!

I have absolutely no plans for this week.  I am hoping my girlfriend gives birth (her due date was this past Wednesday) so that I can visit her and hold a newborn.  I am still working on her baby shower gift, a cross-stitched picture of Winnie the Pooh, so that should be keeping me busy for the next year month week.  I am dreadfully behind on my book club selection, Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens, so I do want to get caught up on that.  And I would like to finish the other non-fiction self-help book I have to review, The Mayo Clinic Diet.  I am ready for some fiction again.

That is about it from here.  Normally, I love being busy, but these days, I do question why I attempt to accomplish so much.  I think I need another vacation.

What about you?  Anything fun planned for this week?  Any particular book you are eagerly anticipating starting or finishing?

Sitting in meetings all day can be exhausting - much less an entire week. Sometimes I wonder how beneficial they really are. I'm looking forward to your review of the meditation book. Enjoy your Sunday and have a great week!

I'm glad you survived such a difficult week. I hope this one is much more relaxed.

Glad to hear you survived your week! I've got Little Dorrit on my list of books to read this year; can't wait to hear what you think of it.

Kristy - I think meetings have their place. I do think collectively, there are too many meetings - meetings to plan meetings, and so forth. It gets a bit ridiculous after a while. I hope you have a great Sunday and a great week!

Molly - Thanks! I'm not planning anything too stressful this week and hope it is relatively stress-free!

Lisa - So far, I am really enjoying Little Dorrit. I wish I were farther along but I want to get these non-fiction books out of the way.

I do that too, where after you read a certain genre you're ready for something different. I've been in a non-fiction mode lately, but now I'm reading The Unnamed by Joshua Ferris. Next up is A Reliable Wife.

Lynne - I am jealous! Both books are on my TBR pile and both are books about which everyone seems to be raving! I can't wait to see what you think!

I don't envy your week Michelle. Hope this one is a lot easier for you.

BTW: If anyone lets me know how to write a book review in less than 30 minutes, I'll be sure to pass it on!

Thanks, Diane! I guess we all have to have a week like this every once in a while to help us appreciate the times when busy takes on a whole new meaning!

Seems like 2010 continues your busy streak, eep sad, have you been able to take some time and put meditation into your life as a little space away from all the stuff going on (asking because of the upcoming book review)? Right now I'm about to finish up 'To the Lighthouse' which makes me want a time machine very much s I can go and worship Virginia Woolf.

Jodie - You've hit the nail on the head. I have a post about meditation coming up this week as well as the review for the book. Yes, I started it in an effort to take back some control of my life. I'm not certain how well I have done there...
